The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) are currently reviewing the qualification process for individuals to become qualified and Approved Driving Instructors (ADI). This may, eventually involve a new ‘Vocational’ qualification linked to National Occupational Standards. They also believe that ‘learners’ should be taught using a ‘client centred’ learning model, namely coaching and this will be another element by which existing and new ADI’s will be tested.
The DVSA are also keen for existing ADI’s to undertake a minimum of 7 hours per year of, Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
I personally believe that CPD should be mandatory and, whilst this is not likely to be the case, it may mean there will be many instructors who will do nothing to enhance their own training updates . However, to demonstrate my commitment to that process I have attended the following workshops and training sessions to ensure my personal training and knowledge is up to date. I also attend monthly meetings of my local Driving Instructors Association.
